The coffee table and end tables are built out of solid
oak; 1"x 2", 1"x 4" and 2"x 4" . The design is reminiscent of Mission style
furniture. The tops are constructed of inlaid granite.
To create
adequate support for the granite a 1"x 2" strip was nailed to the interior of
the top rail. A 3/4" thick sheet of exterior grade plywood was fixed on to the
ledge created by the 1"x 2". Over this was placed 15lb asphalt impregnated felt
upon which 1/2" cement board was screwed down. (Built in much the same way a
kitchen counter top would be built).
The coffee table top uses two types
of granite one a speckled black and white with pink highlights and the other a
solid black. The pink highlights match the sandstone of the fireplace surround
and this granite, uncut, was also used on the fireplace hearth.
The
coffee table top consists of 10 octagons (note the octagons are used through
out the home and yard as a theme) trimmed with black while the end tables are
simpler just being 4 -12" x 12" pieces. Grout joints are black sanded
grout.
