1848 Revolutions of
1848, known in some countries as the People's Spring, Spring of
Nations, Springtime of the Peoples, or the Year of
Revolution, a series of political upheavals take palce throughout
Europe.
Significant lasting reforms included the abolition of serfdom in
Austria and Hungary, the end of
absolute monarchy in Denmark, and the introduction of parliamentary democracy
in the Netherlands.
The revolutions were most important in France, the
Netherlands, the states that
would make up the German Empire
in the late 19th and early 20th century,
Italy, and the
Austrian
Empire.
Technological change is revolutionizing the life of the
working classes.
A popular press extended
political awareness, and new values and ideas such as
popular liberalism,
nationalism and
socialism began to
emerge.
Serious crop failures, particularly those of 1846, produced
hardship among peasants and the working urban poor.
Potato blight
ravaged potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s.
