"It's this
clash, between the authoritarian and the
liberal democracy, that I
believe to be the major ideologcal conflict of my time - not some concocted,
prejudiced notion of an East-West divide, or of a resurrected crusade against
Christendom or Islam.
Authoritarian states are
typically not governments of laws, but
governments of leaders, who
demand loyalty from their
subjects and are hostile to dissent.
Liberal-democratic states, by
contrast, make no or few such demands, but depend almost solely on each citizen
voluntarily assuming the responsibility of protecting the freedoms of everyone
else around them, regardless of their race, ethnicity creed, ability,
sexuality, or gender.
Any
collective guarantee,
predicated not on blood but on assent, will wind up favoring egalitarianism -
and though democracy has often fallen far short of its ideal, I still believe
it to be the one form of governance that nost fully enables people of different
backgrounds to live together, equal before the law.
This equality consists not only of
rights but also of freedoms.
In fact, many of the rights most
cherished by citizens of democraies aren't even provided for in law except by
implication. They exist in that open-ended empty space created through the
restriction of government power.
For example, Americans only have
a 'right" to free speech because the
government is forbidden from making any law restricting that freedom, and a
"right" to a free press because the government is forbidden from making any law
to abridge it.
They only have a"right" to worship freely because the
government is forbidden from
making any law respecting an establishment of religion, and a "right" to
peaceably assemble and protest because the government is forbidden from making
any law that says they can't." - Edward Snowden |
"The London gold fix-all of the
major pricing mechanisms for
calculating government economic policy as well as commercial decisions -
has been discredited because of manipulation by self-interested traders.
In the case of the gold fix, designed to not only
fix a price for settling
contracts between members of the London bullion market but to provide a
recognized rate to benchmark pricing for the majority of gold products and
derivatives throughout the world,
an employee of
Barclays (took fix from N. M. Rothschild & Sons)
manipulated the process to
prevent a derivative previously sold to a client from leading to a payout."

Once
Dionysus' schoolmaster
and foster father, the satyr Silenus, became drunk on wine and wandered
away.
Silenus is found by some Phrygian peasants, who carried him to
their king, Midas.
King Midas treats him hospitably, entertaining him
for nine days and nights with politeness, while Silenus entertained Midas and
his friends with stories and songs.
The next day King Midas took
Silenus back to Dionysus. Dionysus offers Midas a choice of
reward. Without
thinking rationally King Midas asked that whatever he might touch should be
changed into .
Dionysus warns him that once granted the boon could not
be removed, refusing to think twice, King Midas insists. King Midas picks up an oak twig and nothing
happens.
Then he thought - perhaps
it must touch bare flesh!
King Midas removes his glove and picks up
a stone.
It miraculously turns into
! King Midas, overjoyed,
orders his servants to prepare a
magnificent feast of the best
food to be found in the land. King Midas finds it
impossible to
grasp the food!
He had servants try to feed
him but as the food touched his lips
it became inedible turning instantly into
. King Midas jumped up from
the feast table and in so doing
brushed his trusted
servant with his bare arm.
Instantly the man turned into
!
Confused King Midas took
a walk in his garden touching a
whose heavenly scent he had enjoyed so much previously only to
watch it turn into
.
King Midas had a servant hold a
up to his nose but it brushed his lip turning instantly to
.
King Midas began to weep as the
tragedy that had befallen
him became readily apparent.
King Midas' daughter returned from an
outing and was apprized of the situation.
Taking pity she went to the garden
to comfort him.
They set apart from each other as King Midas was
terrified at the prospect of turning his daughter into
. King Midas now had all the
any man could ever want but realized to late that although
was pretty its only true value was as
a vehicle of trade.
King Midas grew thirsty
and hungry.
Emaciated King Midas grew weaker
with chronic fatigue. As
his mind weakening rapidly on
the third day unable to think he attempted to wipe a tear from his daughter's
check and accidently turned her into
. At this point King Midas lost his mind and flung himself
into the garden pond which
instantly enveloped him as it turned into
. King Midas, now encased in
, had more
than any one man could ever want but had found out the hard way
that man can not live on
alone.
Five Hundred Doblón One of Junaid's disciple came to him with
a heavy wood box
containing five hundred doblón.
'Have you any more money than
this?' asked the Sufi.
'Yes, I have,' replied the disciple.
'Do
you desire more?' asked the Sufi.
'Yes, I do,' replied the
disciple.
'Then you must keep it, for you are more in need than
I;
for I have no possessions
and desire no possessions.
Yet you have a great deal and still want
more.'
Farid al-Din Attar of Nishapur
A miser had accumulated, by
effort, trade and lending, five hundred doblón.
The tightwad had
lands and buildings, all kinds of wealth.
The penny-pincher decided he
would spend a year in enjoyment, living comfortably, and then decide as to what
his future should be.
Almost as soon as he had stopped amassing money,
the Angel of Death appeared before him, to take his life away.
The
miser tried, by every argument which
he could muster, to dissuade the Angel, who seemed, however, adamant.
Then the man said: 'Grant me but three more days, and I will give you
two hundred doblón.'
The Angel refused, and pulled again at the
miser's life, tugging at it.
Then the moneygrubber said: 'If you will
only allow me two more days on earth, I will give you three hundred
doblón from my store.'
But the Angel would not listen
to him.
The Angel even refused to give the man a solitary extra day
for all five hundred doblón.
Then the miser said: 'Please, then,
give me just time enough to write one little thing down.'
This time
the Angel allowed him
this single concession.
The tightwad wrote, in
his own
blood:
