human has three endowments:
free
will

these three
endowments give us
the power to choose,
to respond,

Sword of Damocles
Damocles was pandering to
Dionysius, his king,
and exclaimed to him that Dionysius was truly fortunate as
a man of great power and
authority.
In response, Dionysius offered to switch places with
Damocles so that Damocles could taste that very fortune
firsthand.
Damocles quickly and eagerly accepted the proposal
Dionysius made.
Damocles sat down in
the huge throne
surrounded by every luxury.
But Dionysius had hung a longsword above the throne,
held at the pommel only by a single hair of a horse's tail, to give him
a taste of
power.
Damocles finally
begged Dionysius to free
him he no longer wanted to be so fortunate, realizing
with great fortune and power
comes also great danger.

escapes from this dilemma.
One is to
stop being keenly
intelligent and acutely
conscious of the facts.

thought and don't be sophisticatedly psychological
about your motives.

This is called
sacrificing the
pride of the intellect or intellectualism.

ourselves in another dilemma, for the
religion of simple
obedience soon totters
toward empty formalism and
moral legalism with
no heart in it, the very Pharisaism

a romanticism of the instincts,
a glorification of mere impulse
ignoring the equally natural gift of
will and reason.

Logic: A form of
syllogism: the major
premise is formed of two or
more hypothetical propositions and the
minor premise is a
disjunctive proposition:
"If A, then B; if C then D. Either A or C.
Therefore, either B or D."
Most people are
given a situation requiring a
"choice" between equally
undesirable alternatives which is
nothing but a
dilemma.
The excercise of free
will requires informed consent
to one choice out
of multiple choices which jointly and separately do not
present a dilemma.
The excercise of free will
requires the ability
to make an informed decision.
This question remains: Is it possible
to make an informed
rational decision ?
