"As the
Sufi Junnaiyd of the
madrasah said,
the Word of Allah came down to
man as rain to
soil, and the result was mud, not clear water." Kim Stanley
Robinson
~ 300 BC
Logos means much more than
"word."
The word "Logos" in Greek has an
extraordinary range of meanings.
Socrates,
Plato, and
Aristotle describe logos as
the the faculty of human
reason coupled with the
knowledge men possess of the
noumenon and an
understanding of the Way in which
the noumenon manifests.
The Gnostic Hebrew philosopher
Philo of Alexandria saw logos
as "wisdom personified," as
the Creative Principle,
undergirding the
noumenon.
Logos develops a connotative sense of a
recognition of reality for
what reality truly is; deepened understanding of the
rational principle underlying
reality.
Logos, for
Jesus the Tannaim,
refered to divine
logic/reason of Creation.
The Greek concept of Logos seen as
the Law by the
Hellenized
Hebrews.
"Seemingly opposed views within the
authoritative deposit of the text can often be reconciled by observing
the development of a
thought throughout the works of the author in question, by the
establishment of the best texts, and by the
application of hermeneutical
dialectic." -
Peter
Abelard
"To engage the written word means
to follow a thread of thought
which requires considerable powers of
classifying,
inference making and
reasoning." - Neil Postman,
Amusing Ourselves to Death
Hermeneutics may be described as
the development and study
of theories of the interpretation and
understanding of texts.
Hermeneutics typically refers to
the study of interpretation of
religious text.
Hermeneutics is more broadly used in contemporary
philosophy to denote the study of theories and
methods of the interpretation of all systems of text.
The concept of
"text" is here extended beyond written documents to all
rendered abstract conceptual constructs subject
to interpretation.
Hermeneutic
deconstruction typically defines
a specific system of
interpretation, method
for interpretation or specific theory of
interpretation.
In essence hermeneutics involves cultivating
the ability to
understand things from somebody else's point of view,
to put oneself in another's
shoes, to
empathize and to
appreciate social forces that influence perspective.
Hermeneutics
is the process of applying this understanding to
interpreting the meaning of written
texts and symbolic
artifacts (such as art or
sculpture or
architecture), which may
be either historic or contemporary.
Hermeneutic Circle
"The foundational law of all understanding and
knowledge is to find the spirit of the whole through the individual, and
through the whole to grasp the individual". - Friedrich AstTo understand text as a
whole, reference is established to individual parts.
Inference of each individual part
is established by reference to
the whole.
This is the Hermeneutic Circle.
Neither the whole
text nor any individual part can be properly understood without reference to
one another, and hence, it is a circle.
An author shares relevant aspects of
himself through his focus as what can be written
can only frame fragments of
the whole over short periods of time.
Narrator protagonists reveal their
nature through their focus.
This
circular character of interpretation does
not make it impossible to interpret a text; rather, it stresses that
the meaning of a
text must be found within its cultural, historical, and literary
context.
Use of the word hermeneutics refers to
a process of scriptural
interpretation.
Throughout
religious history scholars and students of religious texts have sought to
understand by developing a variety of systems of hermeneutics.
Philosophical hermeneutics,
developed from scriptural
hermeneutics, provides a backing for
interpretive projects.
Philosophical and scriptural hermeneutics
are mutually reinforcing.
Collapsing Hermeneutic Circle
Hermeneutics, the science of text
interpretation, came from two sources.
Around the time Plato spoke
rhetoric was first recognized as a discipline.
The first source is
Aristotle who promoted the study of rhetoric, which soon came to dominate Greek
and Roman education.
The second is
Midrashic and Patristic traditions
of Biblical exegesis.
Scholars in antiquity expected a text to
be coherent while exhibiting unity in consistent grammar and style just as
today.
They amended "decadent"
readings to comply with codified rules.
By
extending the perception of inherent
logic of narrative texts, Greeks were able to attribute works of uncertain
origin.
Exegesis (from the Greek - 'to lead out') involves
an extensive and critical interpretation
of an authoritative body of text, especially of a
holy scripture or
sacred text, such as of the
Old and
New Testaments of the Bible,
the Talmud, the
Midrash,
etc.
Exegesis of
sacred scripture in Christianity "reveals"
how the Holy Spirit inspired the
authors of the scriptural texts to pen
divine
revelations.
Exegesis is used for the
elucidation of
philosophical and legal
texts.
Hermeneutic passion is the desire to know another and be known
by them.
By empathetically entering into a text - in a living
interpretation of a text - the reader both appreciates the text as written and
relates the text to his/her own personal experiences.
Unstable Hermeneutic Circle
"Hermeneutical understanding can be described as
follows:
first of all we have to understand and be guided by
understanding, while the understanding sphere is not limited to science.
Other disciplines, which do not belong to science but are essential in
comprehending, should also be involved.
Distance is a domain of such
"understanding".
In result objectivity can appear only when
methods of investigations and measurements have been devised." - Marcin Furman,
