In the pre-microbial era,
influenza had been considered among the more confusing of the pandemic diseases
for several reasons:
(i) the signs and symptoms were non-specific,
leading to confusion with other conditions;
(ii)
interpandemic influenza-like
illnesses are often attributed to upper respiratory infections, fuelling
ongoing debates about whether interpandemic influenza existed at all, or
whether upper respiratory infections are the same;
(iii) pandemics
occurred sporadically and unpredictably, prompting debates about
a new influenza-like disease the same as the
one seen decades ago; and
(iv) mortality statistics, which began to
appear in record keeping nations in the mid-1800s, showed high mortality only
for the first year or two of a pandemic, seeming to support the belief that
interpandemic influenza did not occur.
Experimental investigation of
infectious diseases in the 19th
and 20th centuries essentially articulated an ontological conception of infectious disease
as a specific condition with a specific cause opening the window for diagnosis.
This
set the plinth or foundation of microbiology, virology and
epidemiology.
1885
Paul Ehrlich, a German physician and scientist working in the
fields of hematology, immunology, and antimicrobial chemotherapy develops the
first chemical to target a specific
pathogen.
Ehrlich developed the precursor
technique to Gram staining
bacteria making it possible to distinguish between
different types of
blood cells leading to the
capability of diagnosing
numerous blood diseases.
His laboratory discovered arsphenamine
(Salvarsan), the first effective medicinal treatment for
syphilis;
initiating the concept of
chemotherapy.
Paul Ehrlich popularizes
the concept of 'a magic
bullet' as much as Sigmund Freud popularized
the idea of a 'happy
pill'.
Ehrlich reasoned if an
antigen could selectively target a disease causing organism, then a "magic bullet" - for that
organism could be delivered.
Ehrlich elaborated the systematic testing
of chemical compounds as now practiced in the
pharmaceutical
industry in clinical
trials.
Ehrlich's work illuminated the existence of the
blood-brain
barrier.
1892 Russian
botanist Dmitrii Ivanovski shows tobacco mosaic is caused by
an unseen agent that passed through filters
with pores too small to admit
bacteria.
Richard Pfeiffer publishes the claim B. influenzae
is the causative agent of influenza.
1895 Louis
Pasteur dies having failed to isolate the causative agent of
rabies.
1898 Dutch botanist/microbiologist
Martinus Willem Beijerinck claims an agent could be serially passed in a manner
that indicated it was a replicating agent, with replication occurring only in
living plant tissue.
Beijerinck called it a 'virus', the incitant of the
tobacco mosaic.
Beijerinck showed that the incitant dispersed through an
agar gel, therefore being an
'infectious' soluble agent, or a 'contagium vivum fluidum' and definitively
not a 'contagium fixum' as would be a bacteria.
1918 "The virus began on the windswept Kansas prairie, where
dirt-poor farm families struggled to do daily chores — slopping pigs,
feeding cattle, horses, and chickens, living in primitive, cramped, uninsulated
quarters.
Camp Funston, at Fort Riley, was the largest training facility
in the Army, full of makeshift non-insulated barracks, housing 250 soldiers

Salicylates and Pandemic Influenza Mortality
The
notion that B. influenzae is the true cause of influenza persists up to
this time when Rockefeller scientists Peter Kosciusko Olitsky and Frederick L
Gates provided strong evidence against a causal association, documenting that
the infective influenza agent survived passage through filters that excluded
B. influenzae.
It is important to note that most of the deaths
during the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic were associated with secondary
bacterial invaders, among them B. influenzae, which Richard Pfeiffer had
discovered.
It is important to note that the sequencing of the 1918
virus took place after more than century of exhaustive and sometimes
disheartening efforts to discover the cause of influenza.
Indeed, the
influenza search not only pre-dated the great pandemic of 1918, but attracted
the efforts of the greatest
observers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Along the way, the new
fields of bacteriology and virology were advanced, and a productive marriage
between microbiology, epidemiology and experimental science began.
The careful examination of nasal mucus gathered from
hospital patients in the midst of
seasonal flu outbreaks invariably reveals
a whole range of unexpected
bacterial residents in the depths of the human body.
1931 Sir Henry Hallett Dale summarized the
three cardinal properties that characterize a virus as “invisibility by
ordinary microscopic
methods, failure to be retained by a filter fine enough to prevent the
passage of all visible bacteria, and
failure to propagate itself except in the presence of, and perhaps in the
interior of, the cells which it infects.”
As Dale's brief summary
shows, the three distinctive properties defining the virus
concept at that time were predicated on the deployment of a number of
practices and were formulated exclusively in negative terms.
Rockefeller Institute investigator Richard E
Shope published the first three of a series of landmark papers establishing the
aetiology of 'swine
influenza'.
1933 Winston Smith learned about
an outbreak of influenza among the staff of the Wellcome Laboratories in
London.
Ferrets housed there for a research project also came down with
the flu.
This seemed to suggest that transmission between animal and
human bodies had occurred.
Ironically, as the scientists realized much
later on, the ferrets had not actually caught the flu, but dog distemper, an
extremely infectious disease affecting the dog populations of the British
aristocracy.
The disease was known to cause similar
symptoms.
British scientists term the strain derived from Wilson Smith
“WS”; it is dried, bottled, frozen, and passed on to collaborating
laboratories in the United States and Australia.
It becomes a classic
laboratory strain.
Only one variety of ferrets allowed microbe farmers
to isolate the causative agent in the laboratory, establish it as the cause of
disease, and describe it in concrete terms.
Microbiology places the
animal body at the heart of 'scientific' medicine.
Not surprisingly, the
ability to work with uninfected animal bodies, carefully bred and kept in
complete isolation, was critical for identifying the unknown cause of a
regularly occurring, rapidly spreading, highly infectious disease.
Constituting the influenza virus as a unique causative agent, as a concrete
biological entity, required the construction of a living test subject
susceptible to the disease and capable of consistently manifesting its clinical
form.

1976
Federal officials vaccinate 40 million Americans for the Swine Flu.
Dr.
David Sencer, head of the Centers
for Disease Control(CDC), confirmes on 60 minutes that flu vaccine has
never been field tested outside current distribution.
"The untested
vaccine during the 1976 swine flu scare resulted in thousands of
severely neurologically damaged
Americans and about 500 reported deaths.
The end result from
the 1976 debacle cost the government $3.5 billion in damages, two-thirds were
for severe neurological injury and
death directly due to the vaccination campaign originated
by the Centers for Disease
Control.
The new Novartis vaccine, which
uses a cell base from dogs, was found to be contaminated with canine-specific
bacteria.
The Centers for Disease
Control refused to honor Freedom of
Information request from CBS
to receive flu infection data for each individual state, the network performed
independent outreach to all fifty states to get their statistics.
A
CBS Investigative Report,
published on October 21, 2009 contradicts dramatically the
CDC public
relations blitz.
In California, among the approximate 13,000
flu-like cases, 86% tested negative for any flu strain.
In Florida, out
of 8,853 cases, 83% were negative.
In Georgia and Alaska, only 2.4% and
1% respectively tested positive for flu virus among all reported flu-like

1987 Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention(CDC) releases a study indicating that the Hib (Haemophilus
influenzae type B) vaccine
shows an
efficacy (effectiveness) rate of 41%.
Vaccinated children are found
to be five times more likely to contract the disease than those not
vaccinated.
1988 An outbreak of breathing
problems in male military recruits at their California army barracks when the
air laden with a heavy odour from brush fires is mistaken for toxic fumes.
Some recruits were ‘resuscitated’ in the early confusion when
medics wrongly assess their conditions to have been more serious.
These
factors created more anxiety and further breathing problems.
A study of
the incident showed that those seeing the ‘resuscitations’ or
witnessing others exhibit symptoms were three times more likely to report
symptoms (Struewing & Gray, 1990).
1997 After eight decades the bird flu evolves into a new
strain, H5N1, and starts killing children.
1998
After eight decades the swine flu evolves into a
pig-bird-human hybrid
mutant virus and appears in factory farm populations.
2005

2007 The US government procures $1 billion worth of
Tamiflu from
Gilead Sciences to "protect"
the country in the case of a bird flu pandemic - enough for
1⁄3 of the population.
Between 1997 and
2007 there were 349 reported cases of bird flu (H5N1) and
at least 216 deaths.
All of these
occurred in immunization compromised individuals.
Tamiflu costs $100
for a recommended 5 day prescription.
Tamiflu, the Roche Holding AG drug
for influenza, designed to fight H5N1 is ineffective on the
H1N1 strain.
Virtually all
virus tested at the Centers for Disease
Control, 72 of 73, are Tamiflu-resistant according to Joseph Bresee,
chief of influenza epidemiology and prevention.
FDA suggests Tamiflu
should carry a revised warning adequately explaining the
delirium, hallucinations and psychotic
behavior experienced by hundreds of patients taking
Tamiflu in America and Japan.
The
erratic behavior is more severe in children.
2008
Baxter, files for a patent for H1N1 vaccine: Baxter Vaccine Patent Application
US 2009/0060950 A1.
Their application states, "the composition or
vaccine comprises more than one
antigen such as
influenza A and influenza B in particular selected from of one or more of the
human H1N1, H2N2, H3N2, H5N1, H7N7, H1N2, H9N2, H7N2, H7N3, H10N7 subtypes, of
the pig flu H1N1, H1N2, H3N1 and H3N2 subtypes, of the dog or horse flu H7N7,
H3N8 subtypes or of the avian H5N1, H7N2, H1N7, H7N3, H13N6, H5N9, H11N6, H3N8,
H9N2, H5N2, H4N8, H10N7, H2N2, H8N4, H14N5, H6N5, H12N5 subtypes."
The
application further states, "Suitable adjuvants can be selected
from mineral gels, aluminium hydroxide, surface active substances,
lysolecithin, pluronic polyols, polyanions or oil emulsions such as water in
oil or oil in water, or a combination thereof. Of course the selection of the
adjuvant depends on the intended use - toxicity may depend on the destined
subject organism and can vary from
no toxicity to high
toxicity."
2009
Outbreak of H1N1
originates in Granjas Carrol which raises 950,000 hogs a year in a massive hog
raising operation in Perote, Vera Cruz, Mexico.
Residents of Perote
claim the outbreak was caused by contamination from pig breeding farms
located in the area where fecal waste isn't adequately treated.
A
municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that
the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the
outbreak was linked to the pig farms.
Area residents complain of "fetid
odors" in the air and water, swarms of flies hovering around fecal waste
lagoons and respiratory
ailments.
In a study published by BioMed Central in 2010 live H1N1
virus was found in fecal material of children.

happening in Mexico City.

Canadian batch of the H1N1 vaccine because it produced serious and immediate
anaphylactic reactions in several cases.
