cold reading
A
talented and charismatic
cold reader will bully a subject into
admitting a connection,
demanding over and over that they
acknowledge a particular
statement as having some relevance while
maintaining they just aren't
thinking or are repressing
an important memory.
Forer effect/Barnum
statements Cold readers use Barnum
statements which seem personal, yet apply to
the group you identify
with, to elicit the Forer effect.
Barnum statements,
designed to elicit identifying
responses, are often open-ended to give the cold reader the maximum amount
of "wriggle room".
Barnum statements can then be developed into
longer more sophisticated
paragraphs that seem to reveal great amounts of detail
about a person.
Forer effect relies heavily on the
eagerness of people to
fill in details so they continually feed the cold reader
more information about their lives.
Barnum statements are of the
form:
"I sense that you are sometimes insecure,
especially with people you
don't know very well."
"You have a box of old unsorted photographs
in your house."
"You had an accident when you were a child involving
water."
"You're having problems with a friend or relative."
"Your father passed on due to problems in his chest or abdomen."
If the subject is old enough, his or her father is quite likely to be
dead, and this statement would easily apply to a number of conditions such as
heart disease,
pneumonia,
diabetes,
cancer, and great majority
of causes of death.
shotgunning"Shotgunning" is a commonly-used cold reading
technique, used by
purported television "psychics" and "spiritual mediums":
Edgar Cayce,
Sylvia Browne, James Van Praagh, Colin Fry and John Edward all used shotgunning
techniques in their stage and television shows.
The
"psychic" cold reader offers very general information,
often to an entire audience and
observes their reactions (especially
their body language).
The cold reader then
acknowledges particular people and
refines the original statements according to their
emotionally demonstrative
response.
This technique is named after a
shotgun, as it fires a spray of small projectiles in the hope that one or more
of the shots will strike the target.
A majority of people in a room
will, at some point for example, have lost an older relative or known at least
one person with a common name.
Shotgunning might include a series of
vague statements such as:
"I see a heart problem with a father-figure
in your family, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a cousin ...
I'm definitively seeing chest pain
here for a father-figure in your family."
"I see a woman that isn't
a blood relative. Someone around when you were growing up, an aunt, a friend of
your mother, a step-mother with blackness in the chest,
lung cancer,
heart disease,
breast cancer ..."
"I sense an older male figure in your life, who wants you to know that
although you may have had
disagreements in your life, he still loves you."
The
rainbow ruse uses
crafted statements which simultaneously awards the subject with
a specific personality
trait, as well as the opposite of that
trait.
This
causes the victim to engage in a transderivational
search.
Transderivational search is a process in the human mind in
which the mind subconsciously follows
all associated memories from
a triggering event.
Associated memories from triggers create
'meaning' within
experience.
Transderivational
search is heavily tied to hypnotic anchoring.
Hypnotic anchoring requires the
engagement of operant
conditioning.
The dog
salivates and Pavlov rings a bell.
The dog salivates, and Pavlov
rings a bell.
Pavlov rings a bell, and the
dog salivates!
Pavlov
creates a hypnotic anchor by pairing two stimuli and
training the brain to
neurologically connect the two through
operant conditioning.
In
hypnosis, transderivational search is used to
invisibly direct
attention.
A cold reader can "cover all possibilities" by using
a phrase that triggers a
transderivational search.
In
the mind of the
victim this appears to have been an accurate deduction.
Personality traits are not
easily quantifiable, and nearly everybody has experienced
both sides of a particular
emotion at some time in their lives.
Rainbow ruse statements might
include:
"Most of the time you are positive and cheerful, but there has
been a time in the past where you
were very upset."
"You are a
very kind and considerate person, but when somebody does something
to break your trust,
you feel deep-seated anger."
"I would say that you are mostly shy and quiet, but when the
mood strikes you, you can easily
become the center of attention."
A cold reader can choose from a
variety of personality traits,
think of its
opposite, and then bind
the two together in a phrase.
People naturally good at personal
observations can unwittingly conduct readings based on cold reading without
a deliberate attempt at
deception.
Cold reading,
in this context, could simply
be "knowledge of
behavior."
A taxi driver in Las Vegas has the ability to gauge
characteristic group style and demeanor of entire occupations through
observation.
Knowing the six big conventions on at the moment, as a
party of five enters his cab, he can discern
followers of "The Call" from
the scuba divers, the phytopathologists from the pilots, the doctors from the
police detectives.
Cold readers read emotion through
the mirror neuron
network.
Every person has the capacity to read emotion but people
shy away from doing so as they feel they may be encroaching on personal
emotional privacy.
This may be the result of the need to rely on
rational
dissociation when in complex social settings such as those we find in
modern consumer
culture.
In Ericksonian hypnotherapy, vague suggestions are used
that the patient must process intensely to find their own meanings for, thus
ensuring that the practitioner does not intrude his own beliefs into the
subject's inner world.
Hypocrisy is claiming consistency
while being inconsistent,
claiming to beleive in
a set of precepts when you're actually unsure and undecided.
Gaslighting is
a defense against
accusations of hypocrisy.
Gaslighting is
a common symptom of people
who hold black and
white self-certainty to be a virtue, and ambivalence to be a
vice.
Gaslighting may be
motivated by someone' need to feel consistent at any cost, even if the cost
is falsely blaming others for
misunderstanding them.
This kind of
gaslighting happens a lot in everyday interaction, even with people -
boy scouts and
missionaires -
who may think they mean
well.
We consciously accept at face value
every statement that we read or hear unless we attempt to
decipher a deeper or hidden
meaning.
These statements may
contain hidden or deeper meanings we are consciously unaware of that
leave deeper nuances of
understanding unexamined.
The
subconscious mind
responds to these openings filling
in the gaps to create a
coherent worldview.
The
process by which the mind searches between alternate understandings is called a
transderivational search.
The search for connections distracts
rational consciousness creating a form of hypnotic induction as
we are unaware of
consciously pondering meaning.
This
transderivational search occurs
below the level of conscious awareness for
those whose hearts have not
been burned in the fire of light.
A vague statement,
introduced with pacing and
leading as part of hypnotic induction, has
multiple functions in facilitating
that hypnotic induction.
The victim becomes a participant in
the hypnotic process as the victim
vacillates between rational thought patterns
and mystical thought
patterns.
Vague statements engage a
victims cognitive linguistic
processes in a looping
transderivational search looking for proper understanding.
Effective hypnotic suggestion engages
imagination by being artfully
vague.
Visual
imagery is a key element of facilitating
hypnotic trance induction.
Ultra compelling communication using
visuals will spellbind an audience.
Pointing sends the
subconscious the message that a person has authority.
Carefully using metaphor allows
mass hypnosis as both the conscious and subconscious mind become engaged in
unified emotional response.
Emotionally stimulating
language uses right
brain imaginative
response rather than
left brain
logic structures to
decipher verbal
communication.
Raising of emotion is
fundamental to hypnotic induction as the subconscious emotional reaction
can be connected to other
subconscious elements.
Stacking language patterns
is a powerful hypnotic
tool.
"Stay on point." -
Richard Bruce
Cheney (message to the media after 911)
Example: "A light will shine down
from somewhere, it
will light upon you,
you will
experience an epiphany", and
"You will say to yourself 'I
have to'.
Hypnotic trance induction has
made action absolutely compulsory.
Notice the language:
bright light shining down upon
you description of epiphany adds
fierce urgency those savvy in the
marketing field know
that adding to the end of any command sales will increase
measurably
Visual
imagery is a key element of facilitating
hypnotic trance
induction.
"Transcendental trap"
in this context is defined as the
belief that one has supernatural power - power
above and beyond those of ordinary men.
"Transcendental trap" =
special favors bestowed on
a 'demigod'.
"I will eat of
the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, that I may
rule all things and be of
myself a lord on earth, and do what I will." -
Jakob
Böhme
Jakob Böhme' mentor,
Balthasar
Walther, travelled to the Holy Land in search of
alchemical wisdom,
Kabbalistic wisdom and a
magical Holy Grail.
Balthasar Walther introduced
Kabbalistic ideas into
Böhme's thought.
When any teacher of religion comes to believe
that he or she is blessed in a supernatural manner then that
rabbi has fallen into the spiritual
corruption.
Milbourne Christopher warned
the "transcendental
temptation" may lead one unwittingly into belief in "chosenness" and a
deterioration of reason.
"In proportion as mind and
heart are fixed upon
the glorified Lord Jesus
Christ, we may count on the enabling of the
ḦṍḸẙ ṦṕḯṝḭṰ.
But if we make the
ḦṍḸẙ ṦṕḯṝḭṰ
the object of our aspirations
and worship, some false
spirit may counterfeit the true and take us for prey." - Sir Robert
Anderson
