A soldier named Nobushige came
to Hakuin, and asked:
"Is there really a
paradise and a
hell?"
"Who are you?"
inquired Hakuin.
"I am a samurai," the
warrior replied.
"You, a soldier!" exclaimed Hakuin.
"What kind of ruler would
have you as his guard? Your face looks like that of a
beggar."
Nobushige became angry, he began to draw his sword, Hakuin
continued:
"So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably too dull to
cut off my head."
As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked:
"Here open the gates of
hell!"
At these words the samurai, perceiving the master's
discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed.
"Here
open the gates of
paradise," said Hakuin.
"God, who is all these kinds of heavens in one,
has fallen on our heads like thunder, and
God's infinity is
ours."
Henri Barbusse
"Before Newton, the heavenly realm and earthly
realm remained separate.
The heavenly
realm was the realm of perfection, where heavenly bodies moved in perfect
circles (well, actually ellipses) and along predictable paths.
The
earthly realm was chaotic; what order there was (tides,
day and night,
seasons, and so forth) seemed to
originate in the heavens.
Naturally people associate
the heavenly realm of order and
mathematical perfection with God.
Heavenly bodies were not subject
to earthly laws -
the moon does not fall out of the
sky the way Galileo's weights fell from the leaning tower of Pisa." -
Charles
Eisenstein
heaven is defined as:abode of bliss
dwelling place of gods
abode of souls after
death
place
conceived of as the domain of divine
beings
The condition of
supreme happiness or
great comfort,
delight, or
pleasure;
perfect felicity;
bliss;
a sublime or exalted condition;
a heaven of
delight.
The expanse of space
surrounding the earth; especially, that which appears to be
over the Earth like a great arch
or dome; the
firmament; the sky; the place
where the sun,
moon, and
stars appear.
The
usual Hebrew word for "heavens" is _shamayim_, a
plural form meaning "heights," "elevations" (Gen. 1:1; 2:1).
The Hebrew word
_marom_ is also used (Ps. 68:18; 93:4; 102:19, etc.) as equivalent to
_shamayim_, "high places," "heights."
Hebrew word
_galgal_, literally a "a wheel,
whirl,
whirlwind" is rendered "heaven" in Ps. 77:18.
Hebrew
_shahak_ rendered "sky" (Deut. 33:26;
Job 37:18; Ps. 18:11), plural
"clouds" (Job 35:5; 36:28; Ps.
68:34, "heavens or
firmament.")
"To
the Lord thy God belong the heavens and the heavens of the heavens."
Resh Lakish said, they are seven, viz.: Vilon, Rakia, Shchakim, Zbul,
Maon, Makhon, Araboth.
Vilon serves no purpose whatever save this, that
it enters in the morning, and goes forth
in the evening, and
renews every day
the work of creation.
Rakia is that in which are set sun and moon, stars and constellations.
Shchakim is where millstones
stand and grind manna
for the righteous.
Zbul is
the heavenly Jerusalem and the
Temple, and the altar is built there, and Michael the great prince stands
and offers upon it an offering.
Maon is that in which are
companies of ministering
angels, who utter His song in the night and are silent in the day for the
sake of the glory of Israel.
Makhon is that in which are the treasures
of hail, and the high
dwelling-place of harmful dews and
the high dwelling-place of
the round drops, and the
chamber of the whirlwind and of the storm, and the retreat of noisome
vapor; and their doors are made of fire.
Araboth is righteousness,
judgement and grace; treasures of life, peace and blessing; the souls of the
righteous and the spirits and souls
which are about to be forged, and
the dew with which the Holy
One, blessed be He, is
about to quicken mortals."-
Babylonian Talmud, Tract
Hagiga, Chapter II
"True
liberation is a
release from hyperreality.
This is not a gift;
it is to be
discovered and experienced.
It is not an acquisition to be gathered
to glorify self.
It is
a state of being, as
silence, in which
there is no
becoming, in which there is
completeness.
This trait may not
necessarily seek expression.
You need not be
a great artist or
have an audience; if
you seek these, you will miss the inward Reality.
It is neither a gift, nor is it the
outcome of talent; it is to
be found, this imperishable
treasure, where thought
frees itself from lust,
ill-will and
ignorance, where
thought frees itself
from worldliness and personal craving.
It is to be experienced through
thought and meditation."
J.
Krishnamurti
"Human liberty comprises, first,
the inward domain of
consciousness in the most comprehensive sense:
liberty of thought and
feeling,
scientific,
moral or
theological." - Ogden Livingston
Mills
"So long as some men wish
to do violence to others, there cannot be complete liberty, as
the wish to do violence must be
restrained, or victims
left to suffer.
Autonomy does not come from allowing
the strong to oppress the
weak .
This is the
basis of the socialist revolt against the kind of freedom advocated by
laissez-faire
economists." - Bertrand
Russell
"The idea
of human liberty is grounded in the belief that each individual has
the inviolate right
to live his life according to his
own conception of the "good life," even when others may believe, and
believe strongly, that the road he has
chosen is leading him to perdition.
As long as
he respects the rights of
others to follow other - perhaps more noble - paths,
his destiny is to be left in his
own hands.
The freedom
philosophy has also
argued that the best chance for individual and
social improvement is an
environment in which peaceful persuasion and
exemplary example act as
the avenues for change." - Richard M. Ebeling
"Of all the
natural human rights
that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is
never free of cost."
Robert
Heinlein
Liberty is defined as:Self-determination
Freedom from
coercion
Freedom to do as one
pleases
Freedom or right to
frequent or use a place
Freedom from
external or foreign
rule; independence
Freedom from
arbitrary control or
despotic
government
Freedom from captivity,
confinement, or
physical
restraint
Freedom
from interference, obligation,
restriction,
hampering
conditions
"Freedom is
independence from a compulsory
will.
Freedom exists according to a
universal law.
The sole inborn
right belonging to every person."
Immanuel Kant
Freedom is defined as:free will
uninhibited
individual liberty
clear of obstructions
being free of
restraint
privileges;
franchises;
immunities
the capacity to exercise
independent choice
exempt from
something specified that controls Exempt from external authority,
interference, restriction, etc., as a person or one's will, thought, choice,
action, etc.; independent; unrestricted.
"Let's stop talking about freedom as if it is
a commodity that someone can
sneak in your house and steal. The
real danger is the false
patriotism that tricks us into surrendering it willingly - and whether or
not we build a concrete and steel
monument to it is somewhat irrelevant." - Carolyn Almos
It is a fallacy to suppose human
beings are truly free at all.
The only human being that could be
considered truly free is the hermit that lives alone in the wilderness and
has no contact with any other
humans.
Every action taken either
fits within the acceptable
standards or it does not.
"How much freedom of individual
action can a social culture allow?"
If individuals are responsible
then more freedom should be granted them by.
"How responsible are the individuals
that run the social culture in question?
If the individuals are
less responsible then less freedom should be granted.
Who decides what
defines a "responsible" individual?
"Responsible" individuals
command staggering revolving credit lines.
In this case those who
buy and sell debt,
packaged as
over-the-counter marketable securities, are those that are granted the most
freedom.
China
has a social scoring system while America has a credit score.
This
devalues all other considerations allowing a
withering from
within.
This
way of granting freedom of individual action relies on rewarding ill
will.
Americans do not enjoy freedom:
1) The controlling interests of America are
not frank, open or
unreserved.
2) The only choice most Americans have is
choice of corporate
overlord.
3) Unscrupulous individuals
create unpleasant and
onerous conditions.
4) Free to act within
narrow boundaries set in place by
overlords.
5)
Americans are 'free' to pay
taxes; 'choose' a corporate overlord; an
insurance carrier; a
stock broker, a
money manager, a
bond broker
6) Americans are
not allowed a representative in government.
7)
Americans can not require
corporations to be socially responsible.
8) Americans do not have
fresh clean air to breath,
fresh clean water to
drink or wholesome clean
healthy nourishing food.
9) Americans are not free of the drumbeat
of the "transhuman
machine" that turns living,
breathing,
empathetic beings into
mindless
automatons.
8) Americans are not free from
the arbitrary exercise of
authority if it is in the "best interests" of society (corporate
interests).
1928 Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer, a Spanish Roman Catholic
masochistic priest, founds Opus
Dei.
Opus Dei, centered around
mortification of the
flesh with the scourge, supports the fascist governments of
Francisco Franco
and Augusto
Pinochet.
Josemaría Escrivá's maxim: "Loved be pain.
Sanctified be pain. Glorified be pain!"

"To refer
to Liberation Theology as "Marxist Catholicism" is
incorrect.
Christian communities preceded
Marxism by nineteen centuries.
4th century Imperial
Christianity married the church to militarism.
Liberation Theology
is the antithesis of Imperial
Christianity.
We built small
Christian communities to observe and act on real issues.
Conscience and
critical thinking became
part of a vibrant spirituality.
Liberation Theology is the key to a future of religious and spiritual
integrity." - Blase Bonpane, Director, Office of the Americas, Los
Angeles
Father Jon Sobrino is a surviving liberation theologist,
part of a team of intellectual Jesuit priests based at the University of
Central America.
Father Jon Sobrino was a close friend of Oscar
Romero the archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated by right-wing
paramilitaries in 1980.
On March 23, 1980 Oscar Romero delivers a
sermon.
He calls on Salvadoran soldiers, as Christians, to
obey God's higher order and to stop
government's repression and
violations of basic human
rights.
On March 24, 1980 A monthly gathering of priests organized
by Opus Dei and led by Msgr. Fernando Sáenz Lacalle is concluded with a
Mass at a small chapel at Hospital de la Divina Providencia, a church-run
hospital specializing in oncology, led by Oscar Romero.
Romero,
finishing his sermon, took a few steps to
the center of the altar.
A red car came to a stop
under the street
lamp in front of the chapel, a gunman got out and shot Oscar Romero through
the heart in front of the altar.
Fernando Saenz Lacalle, a prominent San
Salvador member of Opus Dei, has pushed the Vatican to silence
Father Jon Sobrino for several
years.
Father Jon Sobrino was silenced by
Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, Pope
Benedict XVI, as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of
the Vatican and will not be allowed
to teach or write.
"Americans concerned with illegal immigration need to
start questioning our track record of befriending only the rich and powerful of
Latin America while its wretched masses flood our frontiers." - Roger
Carasso
