"The strengthening
of behavior which results from reinforcement is appropriately called
'conditioning'.
In operant conditioning,
we 'strengthen' an operant in the sense of
making a response more
probable or, in actual fact, more frequent." -
BF Skinner
Basic Assumptions
All behavior is
learned from the environment through conditioning.
There's no
fundamental (qualitative) distinction between
mammalian
behavior.
Behavior can be objectively
noted and measured without accounting for
cognition.
All behavior, no matter how complex, can be reduced
to a simple stimulus-response
association.
Vaccine acceptance and uptake may also
be undermined by COVID-19 vaccines being not fully effective, meaning that
people will have to continue to engage in preventive behaviour (e.g.
mask-wearing and physical distancing) even if and after they have been
vaccinated.
It will be important to manage expectations and ensure that
those who have been vaccinated do not stop adhering to protective behaviours
and expose themselves and others to risk.
A common theme is engagement with local
communities in developing and implementing tailored strategies to support
vaccination uptake.
Behavioural research has shown that vaccine
acceptance and uptake can be increased by adopting the three strategies below.
Creating an enabling environment making vaccination easy,
quick and affordable, in all relevant respects.
Harnessing social
influences especially from people who are particularly trusted by and
identified with members of relevant communities.
Increasing
motivation through open and transparent dialogue and communication about
uncertainty and risks, including around the safety and benefits of
vaccination.
"The apparent complexity of our
behavior over time is largely a reflection of the complexity of the
environment in which we find ourselves." - Herbert A.
Simon
1919 The
Little Albert experiment, run by John Broadus Watson and graduate student
Rosalie Rayner, showed empirical evidence of
the ability to condition
infants by frightening them.
Around the age of nine months, Watson
and Rayner expose a child to a series of stimuli including
a white rat,
a rabbit,
a monkey,
masks and
burning newspapers and
observe the boy's
reactions.
The boy initially showed
no fear of any of the objects he was
shown.
The next time Albert is exposed to the rat, Watson made a loud
noise by hitting a metal pipe with a hammer.
Naturally, the child began
to cry after being frightened by the loud noise.
After repeatedly
pairing the white rat with the loud noise, Albert began to cry simply after
seeing the rat.
The Little Albert
experiment presents and example of how
classical operant
conditioning can be used to condition an emotional response:
Neural Stimulus: The White Rat
Unconditioned Stimulus: The loud
noise
Unconditioned Response:
Fear
Conditioned
Stimulus: The White
Rat
Conditioned Response:
Fear
Watson, a poor academic student, attended the
University of
Chicago where he worked with John Dewey, James Rowland Angel, Jacques Loeb,
and Henry Herbert Donaldson.
Watson founded the school of behaviorist
methodology.
Watson was not concerned with
cognition,
introspection, or any
form of internal
consciousness.
Watson theorized individuals could be
molded into anything.
"Give
me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and
my specified world to bring
them up in and I'll guarantee
to take anyone at random and train him to become any specialist I might
select - doctor,
lawyer,
artist,
merchant, and yes, even
beggar-man and thief,
regardless of his talents,
penchants,
tendencies,
abilities,
vocations, and
race of his
ancestors." - John Broadus Watson

In the Monster Study of 22 children Mary Tudor,
under the tutelage of Wendell Johnson of the University of Iowa, gave positive
speech therapy to half of the children, praising the fluency of their speech,
and negative speech therapy to the other half, belittling the children for
every speech imperfection and telling them they were
stutterers.
Many of the
normal speaking orphan children who received negative therapy in the experiment
suffered negative psychological
effects and some retained speech problems for the rest of their
lives.

Behavior Research Institute founded by Matthew Israel to warehouse
developmental disabilities, emotional disorders, and autistic-like
behaviors.
Matthew Israel creates the graduated electronic decelerator,
GED-1, as an aversive conditioning device that delivers a powerful electric
skin shock to punish behaviors considered undesirable to replace the older
punishments of spankings,
pinches, and muscle squeezes.
1992 Matthew
Israel designs and deploys the GED-3a and GED-4.
1994 FDA clears GED-1 for the treatment of self-harming
behavior, as they considered it "substantially equivalent" to the
SIBIS
Three versions of the graduated electronic decelerator are known
to have been used: The GED-1, GED-3a, and GED-4.
Of these devices, the
GED-1 is the least powerful and the GED-4 is the most powerful.
For
comparison, a cattle prod produces a
shock of not more
than 10 mA lasting for just a breif fraction of a second.
The GED-1
produces a shock of
30 mA, lasting two seconds.
The GED-4 produces a
shock of 90 mA,
lasting two seconds.
According to James Eason, a professor of
biomedical engineering at Washington
and Lee University, the GED's lowest shock setting is about twice the pain
threshold that observers
consider tolerable to most adult humans.
Matthew Israel also
continued to use restraints, sensory deprivation, and the withholding of food
at the now rebranded Judge Rotenberg Center.
Six residents die of
preventable causes since the center opened.
The Shocking Truth
It is a struggle to maintain psychic equilibrium in
a culture that demands submission
to the laws of social
intercourse but refuses to ground those laws in a logical and universally
rational code of moral conduct.
"The whole of ethics rests upon
the same foundation.
For men find that they best promote their own
interests in the long run not merely by
refraining from injury to their fellows, but by coöperating.
Social coöperation is the foremost means by
which the majority of us attain.
It is on the implicit if not the
explicit recognition of this that our codes of morals, our rules of conduct,
are ultimately based.
"Justice" itself consists
in observance of the
rules or principles that do most, in the long run, to
preserve and promote
social
coöperation." - Henry Hazlitt
"The capacity for a noble, even a
holy life, is born within us.
It's part of
human nature, not something
put in from elsewhere.
We know the difference between
kindness and
cruelty,
truth and
pretense, and we
are, at our best, drawn to the better options.
A new Social Ethic is replacing our
traditional ethical
system in which the individual is primary.
The key words in this
Social Ethic are "social
adjustment," "social adaptation,"
"socially orientated behavior,"
"belongingness," "
acquisition of social
skills," "team
work," "group living,"
"group loyalty," "group dynamics," "group thinking," "group creativity."
Its basic
assumption is that the social whole has greater worth and significance than
its individual parts, that inborn biological differences should be
sacrificed to cultural
uniformity, that the
rights of the collective take precedence over what the eighteenth century
called the Rights of Man." -
Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
Revisited
Ethics
is defined as: A set of principles defining correct
behavior within the social group.
The
philosophical study of
the cultural sets of principles,
values and
rules that
define correct behavior within the observered
social group.
Fundamental moral issues, such as
peace,
healing the sick and
alleviation of poverty,
are traditionally the core
values of the followers of Christ.
Highlighting issues may be
considered a political
platform statement.
It is
a political platform
statement for an Eternal Soul
given a mission by the
Ineffable that intends to follow
in the footsteps of Jesus
the Tannaim.
there are two principles of moral
action:
A moral
action reduces suffering of Life.
An immoral action causes
life to suffer.
Two features
of reality point any rational, self-preserving social agent in a moral
direction.
Both features are based on the
understanding life is not a
zero-sum game.
Firstly two individuals are
objectively better off if they both act in a non-selfish way than if each of
them acts selfishly.
Secondly if I ask you to work with me
I must decieve you if it
privileges my interests over yours as
the Rule of Reciprocity is in
play trading favors.
"It is time to separate unchangeable
morals from local
manners." - Mary Wollstonecraft
"The fact is that
traditional morality has practical
authority, independent of whether or not God exists and whether or not we
know God'
will.
Traditional rules of conduct emerge over centuries through a
process of trial and error."-
Jonah
Goldberg*
moral is defined as:
arising from the conscience
using the sense of empathy as a
moral compass
a maxim of human social interaction relating to rules
of conduct
"Speaking then of the state, we regard this word as
nothing more than a certain civil-legal construction, existing only at the
discretion of our will.
This concession to comfort is a sign of common
understanding, impossible without the materialization of the fluidity and
spirituality of relations.
Yet, in the attainment of knowledge we
mistake a mere representation for reality; and so it is
a major curse for the type of understanding
necessary for the establishment of just human relations in society." -
