"By the late 1940s a number of
the more important advisers to CIA and
State
Department psychological warfare
campaigns had trained as Marxists at one point or another during their
careers, and were now applying dialectics and other
Marxian insights to the task
of psychological warfare." - Christopher Simpson, Science of
Coercion
To control a
population turn one segment against another.
Find divisive issues
like - eugenics,
the death penalty,
homosexual rape,
gun control,
permanent war,
transsexuality,
transhumanism and
vaccines.
To divide a unified target
population take advantage of an upheaval.
Use
thought police to initiate
political witch hunts.
Steal
taxpayer funds to fill
the financial
coffers of those in government.
Use
the
military-industrial-corporate-media complex to fight a
war on Iraq to keep
Halliburton,
Bechtel and the
oil tycoons empires
intact.
"Where none are unemployed in
the pre-machine environment of today, it is safe to assume that at least one
man out of ten would always be unemployed; and in the troughs of the business
cycle the ratio might run as high as two or three out of ten.
Under the
hit-and-miss methods of free competition and
the unlimited pursuit of
profit the process implacably
takes its toll." - Stuart Chase,
1931
Competition in biology and
sociology, is a contest
between two or more organisms, animals, individuals, groups, etc., for
territory, a niche, for a location of resources, for
resources and goods, for
mates, for prestige, for recognition, for awards, for group or
social status, or for
leadership.
The duality of
competition requires some to succeed while others fail.
Competition is essentially
detrimental to every aspect of social interaction.
Human relationships,
self-respect,
enjoyment, and productivity
all increase when individuals break out of the
neurotic pattern of relentless
competition.
A narcissistic state of mind
requires competition.
Narcissitic individuals compete to
establish themselves as the most intelligent,
the most
attractive, or the wealthiest.
Narcissitic individuals
compete because they desire acknowledgement,
recoginition and
they do so in an attempt to be
seen as superior.
"Narcissism can be
conceptualized as a
self-regulating system,
where self-esteem
and enhancement are sought through a variety
of social means with
little regard for the
consequences borne by others.
Agentic traits,
assertiveness,
extraversion, and
self-esteem are all
correlated.
Narcissism is associated with benefits to the individual
that are primarily affective and most evident in the short-term, but the costs
of narcissism are paid by others and, eventually, by the individual in the
long-term.
Narcissism may be positive in the short term for
individuals, but negative for other people, society, and the individual in the
long term." - Jean Twenge
American
concepts of competition rest
on false assumptions centered around the
concept of Social
Darwinism.
Most major accomplishments throughout human history have
been achieved simply out of a desire to discover or create and
not directly aimed
at.
Social Darwinism is a late
nineteenth century ideology
used to justify social policies which make
no distinction between those
who cause disaster and those who are left to pay to clean up the
mess.
Social Darwinisman
elevates the notions of:
annointed
messianic Supreme Leader, in ancient times
half man-half god offspring of
a sexual union of a mortal woman and
a male procreator
god;
competition between "legal
persons" occurs on a
level playing field;
imperialism is justified as certain
'races' are superior.
The phrase 'survival of the
fittest' implies internal struggle among
members of a species is the overriding concern.
This creates
a purposeful fundamental
misunderstanding of the theory of natural
selection which states explicitly that
survival is dependent upon changing
environmental factors.
"We've seen the gross misuse of evolution -
under the guise of Social
Darwinism and the "survival of the
fittest" - to justify
class oppression, monopolies,
and imperialism." - David P.
Barash
Group coöperation contributes far more to reproductive
success within the group than competitive inclinations of individuals directed
within the group.
Assume a single violently fierce alpha male begins a
slaughter with a single or multiple murder within a family, a tribe or other
small group.
If all the other males are killed then there is a question
of group continued reproductive viability between family members as the genetic
pool suffers.
An example can be seen recently in history with the
experience of Fletcher Christian and mutineers of the Bounty who settled on
Pitcairn Island.
John Adams was the sole male survivor of a party landing a
decade before.
Direct physically confrontational is a risky strategy
that rarely pays off.
Raising human offspring is
a difficult time consuming undertaking.
Those who coöperate are
more likely to be reproductively successful.
Successful groups have a
predisposition for coöperation in offspring.
Coöperation is pervasive
within any successful grouping of humans.
The second myth is competition mints
ÜbermenschSelf-respect and self-esteem is best built outside of
competitive
frameworks.
Huckleberry is unable to solve an
arithmetic problem.
The
teacher asks Huckleberry to think carefully.
Huckleberry is
unable to answer when unwanted
attention is directed.
But attention hounds have no such problem
waving hands and sighing.
Finally Morn is called upon and
proudly delivers the correct
solution.
The failure of
Huckleberry made it
possible for Morn to
succeed.
To a Hopi or
Lakota, Morn's performance would be seen
as cruel.
As competition occurs in every culture
it must be a part of human nature.
No behavior can be an
innate trait if a
single culture does not exhibit it !
The third myth is that competition is 'fun'. Play
is fun. Playful competition can be fun. Competiton can be defeating.
The
original concept of play emphasizes process
before outcome.
Once you introduce a 'need', an outcome, to any
acvtivity then you have shifted the nature
of the activity engaged in from 'play' to 'work'.
Play is for fun while work is
for survival.
Two children sit on
opposite sides of a checker board.
A marker is placed on the middle square and the children are told they
will take turns moving the marker one square at a time for a total of 20 moves.
If a child gets the marker to his side of the board,
he will receive a
prize.
The game will be played 4 times with alternate children
going first.
Four-and-five-year-old, Anglo-American and
Mexican-American children almost universally helped one another take turns in
winning.
The child who goes second moves the marker in the direction of
the first child' goal so virtually every game ends with
the first child getting a prize.
These children had 'fun' and are
happy they have accomplished their task.
Among
seven-to-nine-year-olds the pattern changes completely.
Both
Anglo-American and Mexican-American
children that watch
television prevent anyone from winning 50 to 80 per cent of the time.
These children are not
happy. These children
did not have 'fun'.
Mexican children seven-to-nine-year-olds with
little contact with MICE
culture managed to coöperate and earn prizes in a
majority of the games.
They had 'fun' and were
happy simply enjoying each others company.
The fourth myth is competitive
frameworks make for
the highest levels of productivity. High
levels of conscious
orientation toward mastery
of skills are found among high achievers, but top achievers show low levels
of competitiveness.
Competitiveness consistently correlates negatively
with achievement.
Those high in achievement were low in competitiveness
as they were focused on the task at hand and were not concerned about
monitoring performance.
"Television shows like
American Idol and The Bachelor teach us, things that are merely
enjoyed - like singing and falling in 'love" - are
piteously wasted. You have
to make them into contests." - Meghan DaumA belief in
the 'benefit of competition' infects
American
consciousness.
Competition, an entrenched
part of American popular culture, is
carcinogenic to
education,
business and politics
leaving rotting carcasses.
Competition can
undermine individual growth and
relationships.
